That'll Sell a Few Copies in Caulfield

ONE OF the nice things about being Michael Leunig must surely be that Age readers are of like mind, which is to say so narrow in their perspective that a simple meme brings absolute fulfillment. In the Duck Botherer's case it is the idea that Jews and Nazis are somehow comparable. Remember this little effort from a few years ago:
That manifestation of Leunig's insight was so offensive even then-editor Michael Gawenda refused to publish it, which is saying something, because there was almost nothing else he would not commit to print. Gawenda is long gone, but Leunig's Nazi fixation remains in effect, as may be seen in today's half measure of wit:

Regular visitors to the Billabong will need no explanation of the second cartoon's inspiration, but for the leftoids who stumble in from time to time (Numbers, where have you gone?), read this.

  1. Why would you even bother with that evil half-wit anymore, or the Der Sturmer-lite paper he scribbles for?
They used to give out The Age at my kid's school, for FREE, and people still wouldn't relax anything but the sport section.

  2. "(Numbers, where have you gone?)"

Unfortunately he darkens the Catallaxy site with his self-indulgent egotistical screed, derailing every thread on which he spits his venom and inane ramblings. The latest: "libertarians are totalitarians".

I fear he's writing yet another autobiography, drip-feed style, at Catallaxy.

    1. More’s the pity.

Please, don’t even mention him in passing. I prefer the Billabong to be a Numerical Numbskull Free site.

  3. I did not speak out for the Palestinians and doors closed for me too: no chance of working at The Age or ABC!

  4. Always funny seeing the Left demonise Israel. What the left fail to realise is that they are the ultimate useful idiots and biggest asset to the Zionist agenda; i.e. the destruction of Western Christian culture and civilisation. Feminism, multi-culturalism, moral relativism etc etc are the Trojan horses for that cause.

    1. Andrew — I agree with you. Moral relativism is a blight on the modern world. I have difficulty though in understanding how it advances the Zionist cause. You need to put a little more meat on the bones. I stand ready to be convinced

    2. Andrew inadvertently misspelled "Islamist".

      Cheers

  5. So you are saying that you believe that the Zionists, ie The Jews, want to destroy western civilization. Isn't this what the Nazis believed as well.

Actually, I thought that currently it was the Islamists, ie The Palestinians, who have repeatedly stated that they want to destroy western civilization.

As Israel is actually a western style democracy based on western civilization, they would have to destroy themselves as part of their destruction of western civilization.

Do you really have so little knowledge of what is happening in the world?

    1. Do you? Do you think you know who your real enemies are? Do you only believe what you read in the Mainstream Press? Hint: It ain't owned by Muslims.

  6. Professor, a question I would ask equally of Leunig: why do you get involved in this debate? Are you a Jew or a Palestinian? Is one side decisively conservative and the other decisively liberal? Is one side utterly angelic and the other demonic? If not, what does it have to do with you, Bolt, Blair and the rest of the Australian conservative media? Equally, what does the Palestinian cause have to do with the ABC and the other quality journalists? It's their conflict - why should we get involved?

    1. See how this goes Plato - Hamas is a terrorist organisation whose stated aim is the destruction of a Western Liberal Democracy. Israel which is the Western Liberal Democracy is a legitimate civilised Nation State. An attack on such an entity is an attack on us all - unless you are some deranged Islamist nutter and even then it still is. Wasn't too hard was it? L'chaim

    2. Plato are you being Socratic?

    3. While I sympathize far more with the Israelis than the arabs Plato has a point.

Israel is NOT a western country, culturally or geographically.

I guess I tend to support them because they are opposed by the people who are so filled with hate against me and mine that the old "enemy of my enemy" line comes into play.

    4. Speaking geographically you are technically correct. Culturally you are way off the mark. Western culture is a Judeo-Christian construct and Jews have been a constant and prolific contributor to that culture despite the various attempts over the centuries to remove them from existence. Do a little research and you will see how wrong your assertion is. L'chaim

    5. "Hamas is a terrorist organisation whose stated aim is the destruction of a Western Liberal Democracy."

I don't doubt that for one second and I utterly condemn them. The trouble is, that doesn't immediately justify all of Israel's actions. No side comes out of the conflict squeaky clean so the only justification I can see for Australian commentators getting involved is if they have a vested interest (i.e. are Jewish or Palestinian) or if one side is decisively conservative/liberal. Otherwise it's not quite as simple as a right/wrong matter. Unfortunately the media's black and white paradigm leaves little room for the grey.

"the old "enemy of my enemy" line comes into play. "

Perfect example here. While I do understand the position, it's possible to side with neither of them, or to hold a sympathy but stay out of the debate. I despise Islam but I also do not support what Israel stands for - and it's nothing to do with Australia anyway - so I'm staying out of the debate.
